I spent a lot of time on my first home made radio controlled tractor getting a gear for the steering and fixing it to the servo. The result was very nice but the servo had to be a certain angle and in a certain place for it to work which was tricky to achieve. The second tractor I done I found a place to solidly install the servo so it couldn’t move, drilled a small hole in the steering rack, put a little arm on the servo and used a paper clip to run between the servo arm and the steering rack. This took all of about ten to twenty minutes and works just as well as the complicated version using the gear.

So in short the advice is keep it simple, over complicating things will only give you headaches.
